Final Music Magazine Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My music magazine front cover, contents and double page spread all inhibit common conventions of a media product, however in order to engage interest and make the magazine my own it does contain a few elements with are unconventional for a contemporary music magazine.

Firstly, my front cover has all of the significant elements of a contemporary, mainstream music magazine. It contains pull quotes, images, sub-headings, price, date, images and the mast head of the magazine.

The front cover also has a conventional colour scheme of consisting of 3 main colours in order to give it a sense of order as appose to looking messy and unprofessional. The magazine therefore has a theme which can easily be distinguished against other magazines.

However unconventional elements of the magazine front cover is firstly; the model. The model is singing into a hairbrush as appose to being a celebrity. This therefore gives the magazine friendliness and allows the audience to establish a relationship with the model and recognise the ideoligies of the magazine because the model promotes the reader profile as she appears fun-loving, care-free and music-loving which is ideally who the music magazine is aimed at.

The contents page is simple so that it is easy to understand because the purpose of a contents page is to allow people to find key features in the magazine quickly. Therefore if the contents page was poorly structured and confusing then it would not be suitable for purpose. To ensure it is suitable for purpose I have included images so that people have a visual indicator of features in the magazine accompanied by the page number. This allows the audience to find what they are looking for straight away. The contents page also follows the colour scheme adopted by the front cover. This ensures continuity throughout the magazine so that the audience feels comfortable in that there is a sense of familiarity throughout.

The double page spread also follows the adopted colour scheme which emphasises the continuity of the magazine further. The double page spread also features the same model as the front cover so the audience have already established a relationship with the model. The double page spread consists largely of images which follows a conventional double page spread model, however the layout is different giving it authenticity.

How does your media product represent social groups?
Firstly, the model on the magazine is female which immediate suggests that the magazine is for a female audience. The model is also wearing pink which also carries connotations of feminity. The model is smiling and singing into a hairbrush which suggests that the magazine's idelogies are fun loving and care free because the model does not represent anything serious or negative. This therefore appeals to a younger audience who fit the reader profile of fun loving, care free and interested in music. The use of the prop; hairbrush suggests that the model is not a singer, but has interest in music. Therefore the audience should be able to familiarise themselves with the model and seek interest in the contents of the magazine because it shall therefore appeal to them. Lastly, the model is making eye contact with the reader which helps the reader to establish a relationship with the reader therefore making the magazine front cover more appealing.

The connotations of 'music mania' insinuate that the magazine is packed full of important information about music. This therefore appeals to music fans.

The double page spread and information on the cover also insinuate that the audience is for devoted music fans who enjoy mainstream music and want a greater depth of knowledge than the average listener. This therefore attracts an appropriate audience for the contents of the magazine.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A similar media institution to the distributor of the top of the pops magazine would be ideal for my music magazine because 'Music Mania' targets a similar audience so will therefore benefit from being distributed by a company which is aware of the target audience and already have thorough experience in targeting the appropriate reader. The company are also known for their successes in distributing the 'top of the pop's' magainze so successfully and therefore they are likely to have a similar success rate in promoting 'Music Mania' because both magazines have similar ideologies and reader profiles.

Top of the Pop's magazine has similar idealogies and conventions to the music magazine I constructed which therefore makes the distributor an apporpriate person to distribute Music Mania.

Who would be the audience for your media product?
In order to establish what genre of music magazine that we are going to create we created a reader profile. This included all the relevant informationt that would enable us to be aware of important aspects that we may feel should be taken into account when creating the front cover and contents page. Therefore the task was very helpful in establishing the target audience and therefore raising awareness of the genre.

This is my reader profile:

The reader profile enabled me to establish an appropriate audience for the music magazine and therefore create realistic ideologies which would engage the audience.

How did you attract/address your audience?
The main feature of my magazine to attract the audience is the model. The long shot of the model enables her to dominate the front cover and therefore immediately become the primary element of the cover which engages the audience. The model is making eye contact with the audience which addresses them personally and makes them feel involved with the magazine which is engaging. The model is also smiling and singing into a hairbrush which suggests to the audience that she is just a 'normal' woman who they can therefore relate too. This addresses them more personally attracts their attention. The colour scheme also enables them to familarise the magazine with the model because she is wearing the same colours as the colour scheme of the magazine. I also edited the image of the model to fade the back ground out slightly so that it looked professional and to ensure direct attention was primarily on her rather than distracting factors in the background which may not represent the idealogies or conventions of the magazine which would have negative implications on attracting the appropriate audience. Also I ensured the double page spread featured further images of the model which ensured the magazine contained continuity throughout which attracts the audience further because they have already established a relationship with the model from the front cover.

Audience Feedback
To evaluate the magazine I constructed, it was critical that I obtained audience feedback.
One way in which I did this was contact friends over facebook via email. I sent them images and asked them to make a short comment on what they thought was good and what they thought I could improve.

Here is one comment for the front cover;

"The colour scheme is good because it is simple and is the same as the models clothes. But the font is small so some of it does not stand out"

Contents Page;

"Having the images is a good idea because you can immediately see what you want to read. But the background is too plain and makes it look a bit empty"

Double Page spread;

"The images of the model are really fun and energetic and attracted my attention straight away, the only thing is that the large font in the middle doesnt look professional"

The comments were really useful in helping me discover what was effective and what could have been improved. I learnt a lot from the audience feedback because i was able to obtain opinions from their point of view which is more accurate than my own because they are the target audience and I am likely to be bias.

After creating the reader profile, I made a questionnaire which will aid the development of my music magazine by providing me with critical information to help me establish what the audience would like out of a music magazine and what they would not like. It also enables me to find out what their current interests are and favourite colours in order to help me decide on a colour scheme etc.

I also did research on different music magazine front covers and contents pages and compared them to identify what was good about them and what was not so good. This helped me recognise what made an affective front cover and contents page and what did not. I found that for a pop magazine and a younger audience it is important that they are very bright, colourful and informal so that it engages with a younger audience as appose to a formal structure and bland colour scheme which may appeal to an older, more sophisticated audience. The research gave me insight to how different images, type faces and colour schemes can portray the genre of the magazine and therefore appeal to the appropriate audience. I did research on the X Factor magazine and the top of the pops magazine for the front covers because these relate more closely to the genre I am adopting with my music magazine. However for the contents pages I looked at a range of magazines and found that they had a much more varied style, therefore I was able to analyse them in greater detail.

After planning out drafts, I decided that I wanted the music magazine to relate to older chart music. This should therefore engage older teenagers and shall be a unique music magazine as it will not be similar to any other magazines currently on the market. Therefore I began to design the front cover and contents page to relate to an older style. This theme is reflected in the font of the title I chose for the magazine, it is also reflected in the old fashioned style and format of the magazine as well as in some of the images. However some of the old themed typefaces, images etc contrast with new ones which gives the magazine a contemporary feel to appeal to a younger audience and raise awareness of older music.

However, the only problem with changing my ideas to having an older theme is that it makes it more difficult take pictures which reflect the ideologies of the magazine. I am going to take a picture of someone dancing but dressed up in fashion which was evident at the time of the music which shall therefore reflect the ideas of the magazine.

After establishing a number of difficulties with the idea of creating a magazine about older music I decided to stick with my original idea of creating  a magazine about mainstream music which shall attract a larger audience.

I have chosen my target audience to be mainly teenage girls aged between 12-24. This is a large age catergory so I therefore need to ensure that I include aspects and a colour scheme to attract the entire target audience.
The model on the magazine is female which immediate suggests that the magazine is for a female audience.

The colour scheme is consistent on the front cover. It is made up mostly by three colours; Pink, Navy and White. This works in concordence with the models clothes which therefore links the model with the magazine as well as making the magazine look more attractive. The pink adds feminity and fun, whereas the blue adds an element of sophistication and seriousness. The white works to seperate the pink and the blue to ensure that they do not clash or become over powering. Therefore the colours work well together and convey an appropriate message to the reader. The colours suggest that the magazine is fun and feminine whilst suggesting that the reader are sophisticated, this is important because it makes the reader feel respected. The colour scheme is also adhered to by the text which ensures that the magazine has a theme and does not look jumbled and chaotic with different colours flying everywhere otherwise this would make the magazine look unprofessional and would therefore not appeal to the audience as it would not be taken seriously. The only other colour introduced with the text is black. Black is used with the text because it is clear and easy to read which therefore makes it appropriate for the text. There is not too much text, so the change in colour is relatively unnocticeable which ensures the colour scheme is still consistent.

Small icons/images are used to reinforce the text. Images are appealing as they give meaning and ideas immediately without reading anything beforehand. Therefore the images appeal to the reader because they are simple and highlight the message that the text is portraying. The images will apply particularly to the younger end of the target audience, whereas the text will appeal more to the older end. This therefore ensures that both ends of the age range are catered for making the target audience as broad as possible in terms of age.

A lot of the important information is primarily on the left of the magazine front cover. This ensures that no matter how the magazine is displayed in a shop, the most important information will be displayed to appeal to the target reader.

The mast head is bold and stands out, the dark colour on the light back ground also makes it clear and easy to read. The connotations of 'music mania' insinuate that the magazine is packed full of important information about music. This therefore appeals to music fans.

If I was to do the magazine again, I may include more headings and pull quotes in order to attract the audience because the magazine front cover may be criticised for not having enough information on the front cover or for looking a bit blank, this would therefore put off potential readers rather than appealing to them. However, I like the magazine showing not too much information because it prevents it from looking over crowded and busy because this would have negative implications on the appearance as it would look chaotic rather than laid back and fun.

In order to evaluate the magazine front cover successfully, I created a short questionnaire to ask people what they thought about my magazine. The results were helpful in helping me establish what I did well and what I did not do so well;

1.What do you like the most about the front cover?
A) The model = 7
B) The colour scheme = 5
C) The layout = 3
D) The information = 4

2.What do you like the least about the front cover?
A) The model = 3
B) The colour Scheme = 5
C) The layout = 6
D) The information = 5

3.If the magazine were on the market, would you buy it?
A) Yes = 12
B) No = 7

In conclusion, the results helped me establish that I would need to improve on the layout and information, whereas the model was successful in promoting the magazine to the target audience. The model also promoted the ideologies of the magazine well too.

The contents page follows a similar style to the front cover in order to keep a style which the readers can relate to because otherwise the magazine may appear unprofessional which can be unappealing to many readers. It also helps establish the magazine as a brand. Therefore the same colour scheme is appropriate in suggesting the magazine has consistent ideologies.

14/09/2010 - practise questionnaire

In preperation for the coursework we are doing a questionnaire to help us design a practise magazine cover for our school. Therefore I created a questionnaire which I sent out to every year 7 in the school asking them to kindly fill it in if they could find the time. It is seven questions long which may be too short, however they are precise and closed questions which will help me find out the information I require to design the magazine cover. I included pictures in order to make the questionnaire more appealing and clear instructions on how to fill it in so that they do not get confused and abandon the questionnaire.

So far, I have had plenty of responses and am finding the results very helpful in helping me to decide what format to design a school magazine cover. Therefore I have found that sending the questionnaire has been much more successful because people find computers more convienient and quicker to use.

Using programmes available on the computer, we tried to manipulate photos to give them a theme or change them in some way. I found this task difficult because I lacked imagination in how to change the photos, I chose to edit the mid-shot photo but still found it difficult to find inspiration. After a little while of playing around I decided to make the photo resemble light and happiness by making the colours brighter and increasing the light on the photo which made it appear as though it was a summery holiday shot of a smiling girl. I think I will find it easier to find inspiration when manipulating the photos with purpose, (when doing them for the front cover of the magazine). Overall, the task was useful in familarising me with the software and I have learnt that I need to use more imagination in order to create a quirky and meaningful image.

After having a play around editing pictures I found it easier to edit the image for the preminerlary task which involves making a school magazine. I took a picture of my sister in her school uniform who is currently in year 8 for the front cover. Here are the photos that I have put on my front cover:

I took the pictures with intent to symbolise the school as a happy and educational atmosphere as a result of the questionnaires I got back from the year 7's who said that they saw the school as a place to learn as well as make friends. I have inserted both pictures onto the front cover. The bottom picture is the main image on the front cover because it is a more typical image for a magazine as it involves a mid-shot with eye contact and a smiling face which represents the school as a friendly place. I put the first image as a small icon next to a pull which said 'top 5 homework tips' to give a physical image of a student doing homework.
